Searching all of Japan for handcrafted items that express its heart and soul, our proprietor, KASHIYUKA, presents things that bring a bit of luxury to everyday life. This time we traveled to the city of Asahikawa on the northern island of Hokkaido to visit the studio of a woodcarving artist, and found ourselves face to face with a bear — his creation, Ken-chan Bear.

  • For about the past century, artisans in Hokkaido have been producing bears carved from wood. Mr. Sato Kenji began his practice in 1971, when demand was high following a boom in tourism to the northern island. He sources his wood on the open market and from fine wood purveyors, and carves them using chisels and carving blades. He’s one of the craft’s few remaining practitioners.
