Searching all of Japan for handcrafted items that express its heart and soul, our proprietor, KASHIYUKA, presents things that bring a bit of luxury to everyday life. This time we arrived in Hakusan, Ishikawa prefecture, and there encountered a handmade silk, ushikubi tsumugi, that is both durable and delicate, and spun from the cocoons of two silkworms working together.

  • At Nishiyama Sangyō’s Hakusan Workshop, where the traditional, handcrafted ushikubi tsumugi fabric is made. The studio, in Ishikawa prefecture, is responsible for every step of the process; from making the thread, through to the final weave. Our shopkeeper, KASHIYUKA, was especially drawn to natsu ushikubi, which is used to make a light, single-layer hito-e kimono. “It’s so light and delicate. The little thread knots scattered here and there are especially nice.”
